On the topic of Galician (post 1772) tiny sliver of historical province of Podolia, researching new topics for my research, I came across letters of Countess Kossakowska (the owner of Stanislawow, Bohorodczany county, saltworks in Nadworna and many other estates in the eastern part of Galicia and in Podolia). Even before Podolia, situated east of Galicia fell under the Russian rule (1793), the countess and her correspondents worried that Habsburg Monarchy would trade off the Galician portion of Podolia for some unspecified territories with the regime of Empress Catherine of Russia. This would have meant loss of the countess' properties not only in Podolia but also in Galicia (clearly, she was not viewed favorably in St. Petersburg). At the end, nothing of that happened until 1809. In the fall of 1809, as a result of defeat of Austrian forces, Napoleon forced Austrians to transfer the very eastern portion of Galician territory to Russian Empire (among main towns Tarnopol, Czortkow and Zaleszczyki). That particular year Russian Tsar was aligned with Napoleon forces in their campaign against Austrian empire (including many battles in Galicia). This territory was returned to Austrian Galicia in 1815. (Source: Andrew Zalewski)
